Retatrutide in the UK: what it is, its legal status and what to know before buying
6 minute read · Updated November 2026
Retatrutide is one of the most searched peptides in the UK right now — and one of the most misunderstood. It produced the largest weight-loss figures seen in a trial so far, and it is not a licensed medicine. This page lays out both facts plainly, and what they mean if you are considering it.

Why retatrutide is getting so much attention
Retatrutide activates three receptors — GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon — rather than the one or two targeted by semaglutide and tirzepatide. In the phase 2 trial in adults with obesity, participants on the highest dose lost around 24% of their body weight on average over 48 weeks: the largest figure reported in a weight-loss medicine trial to date.
That number is real, and so is the caveat attached to it: it comes from a smaller, shorter trial in carefully selected participants. Larger phase 3 trials are still running, and until they report, nobody can promise you the same result.
Its legal status in the UK
As of writing, retatrutide has not been approved as a medicine by the MHRA in the UK or the FDA in the United States. It remains an investigational compound. There is no licensed product, no agreed dose schedule and no regulated supply chain.
That status changes as trials report, and it is worth treating any seller's claims about 'pharmaceutical grade' or 'lab tested' retatrutide with scepticism — there is no licensed benchmark for those claims to be tested against. Our prescriber will confirm the current position with you at assessment, because this picture moves.
What that means if you are considering it
- Less long-term safety data exists than for tirzepatide, which has years of real-world use behind it.
- Trial participants reported the familiar digestive effects of incretin medicines — nausea, diarrhoea, constipation — plus increases in heart rate in some participants.
- Anything sold as retatrutide today comes from outside the licensed medicines route, so the quality of the supplier and the involvement of a prescriber matter more, not less.

How Apex Labs approaches retatrutide
We sell retatrutide at £125 per pen (30mg per pen), and we do not treat it as a browse-and-buy product. Every order is reviewed by our prescriber first, who will tell you honestly whether an investigational compound is the right choice for you — including when the right answer is tirzepatide instead.
Payment is never taken before that approval. If you would rather talk it through with a person first, request a call back and the team will ring you.
Common questions
Is retatrutide legal to buy in the UK? It is not a licensed medicine, so it cannot be supplied through the normal licensed route. That grey area is exactly why prescriber oversight and an honest conversation about alternatives matter.
Is it better than tirzepatide? The trial weight-loss figures are larger, but the evidence base is far smaller and shorter. 'Better' depends on your circumstances, which is what the prescriber assessment is for.
When will it be licensed? That depends on the phase 3 trials and the regulators; no date is confirmed. We update this page as the position changes.
